The Edo State Police Command has detained a 24-year-old TikTok creator, Osarobo Omoyemen, popularly known as “Madam Oil Rice”, over an alleged staged kidnapping designed to attract more followers to her social media account.

Police sources said Omoyemen was tracked and arrested after investigators established that her widely circulated claim of being abducted along Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City, was entirely false.

The video, which she later deleted, also contained allegations that she had been rescued by operatives, detained at Akpata Police Station and compelled to pay N10,000 for bail.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, said the command moved swiftly once the video gained traction online.

“Findings revealed that the entire story was completely fabricated and deliberate. The suspect has been identified, arrested, and charged to court on Thursday, 20th November, 2025. Efforts are ongoing to arrest her accomplices to ensure they face the full weight of the law.”

The police spokesperson warned against the dissemination of false alarms capable of undermining security efforts or causing public panic.

“Members of the public are advised to verify information before sharing and to refrain from acts that may mislead the public or undermine the efforts of security agencies,” he said.

During questioning, the TikToker allegedly admitted to staging the stunt to drive engagement and increase her follower count.

According to the police, she also deleted an earlier version of the video that showed an accomplice urging social media users to follow her page—an action investigators say exposed the true motive behind the hoax.

The Command stated that the false report was not only misleading but capable of “inciting hostility against the Police and triggering unnecessary tension within the state.”

It added that the arrest is intended to discourage similar antics by social media users seeking attention at the expense of public peace.
