Panic gripped residents and commuters in Onitsha, Anambra State, yesterday after a petrol-laden tanker toppled on the ever-busy Enugu Road, obstructing traffic and heightening fears of a possible explosion.

The tanker, which fell directly in front of OVL Filling Station at No. 18 Enugu Road, reportedly crashed around 11:15 a.m. after one of its tyres suddenly deflated, causing the driver to lose control.

The incident brought vehicular movement to a halt as security operatives and emergency responders cordoned off the area to avert an outbreak of fire.

Officials of the Anambra State Fire Service quickly deployed personnel to the scene, spraying the surroundings with water to reduce ignition risks.

Confirming the incident, the Head of Media and Publicity, Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, said two fire trucks were immediately sent following the distress call.

He said, “A fully loaded tanker has fallen at No. 18 Enugu Road, directly in front of OVL Filling Station, Onitsha, the commercial nerve centre of Anambra State. The cause of the accident was traced to a deflated tyre, which led to the tanker losing balance.”

“The emergency call was received at 11:55 hours today, and firefighters are currently still at the scene working to ensure safety and prevent any outbreak of fire.

Two firefighting trucks from the Anambra State Fire Service responded promptly to the incident.

“Motorists are strongly advised to drive with caution and ensure that all parts of their vehicles, especially heavy-duty trucks, are thoroughly checked before embarking on any journey to avoid such dangerous incidents.”

He added that further updates would be provided as the situation unfolds.

Yesterday’s incident comes barely days after a separate tanker explosion rocked Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, killing one person and destroying at least six shops.
