The Senate on Wednesday intensified its push against the rising wave of abductions across the country, adopting a resolution classifying kidnapping as an act of terrorism and urging amendments to the Terrorism Act to impose the harshest possible sanctions.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, senators agreed that any individual convicted of kidnapping should automatically face the death penalty once the law is revised.

The decision reflects growing concerns over the rising rate of abductions in the country and the urgent need for stronger deterrent measures.

“The resolution mandates that, upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced,” the Senate stated.

Lawmakers stressed that the position was aimed at addressing the worsening insecurity and sending a firm warning to those involved in abductions.

More legislative action is expected as the Senate moves to initiate the amendment of the existing anti-terrorism framework.
