An 18-year-old resident of Bazza community in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Aminu Abdulazeez, has been handed a three-month community service sentence after admitting he stole soft drinks to celebrate his birthday.

Aminu was said to have taken half crates of Nutri Milk and Dudu mineral drinks to entertain his friends during the planned celebration. His plans, however, collapsed when he was traced and arrested while making further arrangements for the event.

He reportedly confessed to the offence before the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee when the team visited the Mubi Correctional Centre, where he had been remanded.

The Area Court I, Bazza, had earlier convicted him and imposed a three-month jail term with an option of N40,000 fine.

He was transferred to the correctional facility last month after failing to raise the fine.

During a review of his case, the Jail Delivery Committee led by the state Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, commuted the custodial sentence to community service.

The committee directed that Aminu be returned to Bazza to sweep a public facility — either a health centre or a police station — for three months.
