No fewer than 25 shops were razed on Tuesday night when fire swept through the popular Terminus Market in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Wednesday, the market secretary, Zakari Sale, said no life was lost in the inferno.

He said the fire started between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., adding that operatives of the Federal Fire Service and the Plateau State Fire Service responded promptly and were able to prevent the flames from spreading to other sections of the market.

Sale noted that the level of destruction was not as severe as what had been recorded during previous fire incidents at the market, although he did not give an estimate of the value of property destroyed.

He added that investigations were ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.
