Three people were killed and several others wounded after unknown gunmen disrupted a traditional marriage ceremony in Akunza, a Migili-speaking quarter of Ashige in Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Tuesday night.

A community youth leader who confirmed the attack to reporters said the assailants struck while the wedding festivities were under way, plunging the gathering into panic as mourners and guests fled for safety.

“At least three persons were killed during the onslaught. Several others—including women and children—sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving treatment at a nearby health facility,” the youth leader said.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the gunmen opened fire and scattered revelers.

The motive for the assault remained unclear at the time of filing, and residents called on security agencies to intervene urgently to forestall further violence.

No official statement had been issued by security authorities as of press time. Investigations into the attack are ongoing.
