The National Assembly has directed the Clerk to release copies of the tax bills recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following public concerns over alleged discrepancies in the gazetted versions of the Acts.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Director of Information, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, said the decision was taken to promote transparency and address questions raised over differences between the legislature’s votes and proceedings and the gazetted tax laws.
According to the statement, the documents to be released will include certificate pages to allow members of the public independently verify the authenticity and content of the assented bills.
The National Assembly leadership noted that while public interest in the matter has been high, only a few individuals had formally applied for certified true copies of the harmonised bills, adding that all such requests had been duly processed.
It explained that interested persons could apply to the Clerk to the National Assembly, specify the bills required and pay the prescribed fees.
The statement added that the Clerk was working with the Federal Government Printing Press to publish the certified and assented Acts in line with statutory requirements, with the gazettes expected to be ready on or before January 1, 2026.
It clarified that while the Clerk initiates the gazetting process, the responsibility for printing and publication rests with the Federal Government Printing Press.
To strengthen institutional procedures, the National Assembly disclosed that it is reviewing its processes for the transmission and gazetting of bills.
It said that going forward, all bills forwarded for presidential assent would be routed through Presidential Liaison Officers, while the Printing Press would only entertain gazetting requests initiated by the Clerk or an authorised representative.
The National Assembly thanked Nigerians for their interest and constructive engagement, noting that such scrutiny helps to deepen transparency, accountability and professionalism in the legislative process.
