Operatives of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kano have arrested a 20-year-old man alleged to have attempted to sneak illicit drugs into a custodial facility using a loaf of bread.

A statement issued on Thursday revealed that the suspect, who resides in Tishama Hotoro Quarters, was apprehended at the premises of the Kano High Court by officers attached to the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre.

The arrest was made while inmates were being escorted to the court for their routine appearances.

During a search, personnel reportedly uncovered a substance suspected to be Indian hemp hidden inside a loaf the suspect allegedly planned to deliver to an inmate.

The state Comptroller of Corrections, Ado Inuwa, directed that the suspect be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for deeper investigation and prosecution where necessary.

Inuwa praised the vigilance and professionalism of the centre’s officer-in-charge, ACC Kafilu Abdullahi, and the team that intercepted the contraband, noting that preventing drug infiltration remained a top priority for the service.

He reiterated the NCoS’ commitment to running safe and drug-free custodial facilities and appealed to parents and guardians to discourage young people from aiding criminal activity.

The service noted that the interception follows a similar attempt recently blocked at another custodial facility, as authorities intensify efforts to curb crime in correctional centres.
