A tragic fire on Friday afternoon claimed the life of a 103-year-old woman after a residential property went up in flames on Bola Street, Oyingbo, Lagos.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident, saying its officials were alerted shortly before midday.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said responders arrived at 12:13pm to find the bungalow — with two attached shops — already overrun by fire.
He said the inferno reportedly began in one of the rooms before sweeping through adjoining sections, though the exact cause remains unclear.
“Preliminary checks revealed that a fire outbreak consumed a residential bungalow and adjoining shops.
Sadly, a 103-year-old woman could not be rescued,” Oke-Osanyintolu noted in the agency’s update.
The blaze destroyed eight rooms, a mini flat, six shops and various personal belongings.
Emergency teams eventually brought the situation under control, but not before the centenarian succumbed to the incident.
According to LASEMA, the deceased’s remains have since been released to her relatives, while cooling and recovery operations at the site were concluded
