Tragedy struck Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, following the death of a 300-level Computer Science student, identified as Kelvin Danlami.

The undergraduate was reported to have died on Monday, January 19, 2026, in an incident said to be connected to financial distress after he allegedly lost ₦150,000 meant for house rent to gambling activities.

Reacting, the Students’ Union Government of the institution expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Aliyu Abubakar, the union described the death as a painful blow to the student body and the entire university.

The SUG said the late student’s passing was an irreplaceable loss to his family, the Department of Computer Science and the institution at large.

“On behalf of the entire student community of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The union also prayed for divine strength for the bereaved family and comfort for students and staff affected by the incident.
