The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 42-year-old man, Edwin Eze, before a magistrate’s court over the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl in Mburubu community, Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect was brought before Magistrate Chijioke Idu of the Enugu East Magistrate Court, where he was charged with unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor.

According to the charge, marked CMG/69c/2026 and filed by the police, Eze allegedly committed the offence in November 2025 at Amanato area of Mburubu, within the jurisdiction of the court.

The police alleged that the defendant had unlawful sexual intercourse with the minor, an offence said to be contrary to Section 3(1)(a) and punishable under Section 4(1)(a) of the Enugu State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law No. 2 of 2019.

The magistrate adjourned the case to February 12, 2026, and ordered that the accused be remanded at the Enugu Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Government has reiterated its resolve to intensify actions against child molesters and offenders involved in gender-based violence.

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Ngozi Enih, said the administration of Governor Peter Mbah maintained zero tolerance for all forms of child abuse and violence against women.

She noted that the government would closely monitor the case to ensure justice was served, stressing that offenders would be made to face the full weight of the law.

“This case further underscores our commitment to ensuring that anyone who violates the rights and dignity of children and women in Enugu State is held accountable,” Enih said.
