The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old man, Alhaji Hassan Umaru, for allegedly killing his wife’s suspected lover during a confrontation in Gulani Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesman, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the incident occurred on Sunday at Bundila village.

Abdulkarim said the suspect and the deceased, identified as 45-year-old Sukari Abdul, were both residents of the community.

He explained that the altercation, said to be linked to an alleged extramarital affair, took place at the Bundila market square.

According to the police, Umaru allegedly attacked Abdul with a cutlass, inflicting injuries that later proved fatal.

“Operatives from the Bara Divisional Police Headquarters promptly mobilised to the scene and rushed the victim to the Bularaba Primary Health Care Facility, where he was confirmed dead by a medical practitioner,” the statement read.

It added that the suspect was immediately arrested, while the weapon allegedly used in the attack was recovered.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, cautioned residents against resorting to self-help in addressing marital or social disputes.

He urged members of the public to channel grievances through lawful means, stressing that the command would ensure diligent prosecution of anyone found culpable in line with the law.
