Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a nursing mother, her children and other family members along the Eko-Abeku-Iyowa Road in Edo State, with the attackers reportedly demanding N260 million for their release.

The abduction occurred around 5pm on Monday, February 2, 2026, within Evboneka community, along the Benin–Akure Road, as the victims were returning from school.

Among those taken were a nursing mother, six children, including a baby and other relative.

However, the nursing mother and her infant were later released by the kidnappers, reportedly after a heavy downpour on the day of the incident.

Head of the family, Mr Festus Bamidele, said the family became aware of the abduction when the woman and her baby returned home and narrated their ordeal.

He added that three pupils of pre-kindergarten age were later rescued by vigilante members and police operatives in Evboneka community.

Bamidele disclosed that four victims, aged between 11 and 26 years, are still in captivity.

Those still being held, he said, include two of his children, his younger sister and a sister-in-law.

According to him, the abductors have since contacted the family and demanded N260 million as ransom.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, SP Eno Ikoedem, said operatives of the Ekiadolor Division engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel.

She explained that five of the victims were rescued unhurt during the operation, while four others were taken away by the fleeing suspects.

Ikoedem added that the police, in collaboration with hunters and vigilantes, had launched an intensive bush-combing operation to track down the kidnappers and rescue the remaining victims.

She said efforts were ongoing to ensure the safe return of those still in captivity.
