A 20-year-old Nigerian student, Khaleed Oladipo, studying cyber security at De Montfort University in the United Kingdom, has been killed after being stabbed in Leicester.

Leicestershire Police confirmed that Oladipo died in hospital after sustaining a stab wound to the chest on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Oxford Street, close to the university campus.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the police said an investigation had been launched into the killing, adding that an 18-year-old suspect had been arrested and remains in custody.

The family of the deceased, in a tribute, described Oladipo as a devoted son with a strong passion for football.

They said he had played the sport from an early age and was a loyal Arsenal supporter.

According to the family, the student was believed to be on his way home to watch an Arsenal match when he was attacked.

While calling for justice, the family expressed appreciation to the police for the steps taken so far in the investigation.

“We are grateful to the police for their efforts to ensure the person responsible is brought to justice,” the family said, adding that they were still struggling to understand the motive behind the killing.

They noted that although justice would not bring their son back, they were determined to ensure that those responsible were held accountable.
