A young woman has fled after allegedly stabbing her husband in a grisly domestic incident in Potiskum, Yobe State.

The police said the 18-year-old suspect, identified as Khadija Jamilu, attacked her 25-year-old husband on Friday, inflicting a deep cut to his genital area. The victim was initially taken to the State Specialist Hospital, Potiskum, before being referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Azare, where he is receiving treatment, the Yobe State Police Command said in a statement.

SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the attack on Saturday and said the suspect remains at large.

“Following the report, police operatives promptly visited the scene and rushed the victim to the State Specialist Hospital, Potiskum, for urgent medical attention. He was subsequently referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare, where he is currently receiving treatment,” the statement read.

The police added that efforts to apprehend Khadija are ongoing and that detectives have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Yobe State Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Ado condemned the incident, stressing that marriage must be founded on “mutual respect, understanding, patience and tolerance.”

He warned that marriage should never serve as an excuse for violence, abuse or humiliation, the statement said.

Residents were urged to remain calm and to assist security agencies with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.

Authorities also appealed to anyone who may be harbouring the fleeing woman to turn her in, saying swift justice will be sought once she is apprehended.

Police investigations continue.
