Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will back only candidates who align with President Bola Tinubu’s vision in the upcoming FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, regardless of their political party.

Wike made the statement on Saturday during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, describing the event as a tribute to six decades of leadership, scholarship, and public service.

“I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win the FCT election,” Wike said.

“Likewise, I will ensure that any candidate opposing Tinubu does not succeed. I owe no apology for my position.”

Speaking about the celebrant, Wike praised Onor as a “credible ally, trustworthy friend, and good brother,” emphasizing that Onor had always stood by him and his family in times of difficulty.

Prof. Anthony Eyang, who read the citation for the celebrant, highlighted Onor’s upbringing in Ikom, Cross River, noting that his journey from the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate and Cross River politics reflects a life dedicated to learning, leadership, and societal advancement.

Senator Philip Aduda, chairman of the planning committee, described the event as a thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness in Onor’s life, both as an academic and politician.

Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Otom, standing in for Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, and former Abia State Governor, now Ambassador-designate, also lauded Onor as a model leader and patriot.

Chief Kalu Agabi (SAN), former Attorney General of the Federation, described Onor as courageous and intelligent, while Prof. Dave Imbua of the University of Calabar presented a Festschrift, a commemorative book by scholars honoring Onor.

The book, reportedly funded with N50 million, was unveiled by Ikpeazu on behalf of Wike and friends.

In his remarks, Onor reflected on his 60 years, emphasizing the value of character, hard work, and divine guidance.

He expressed gratitude to family, friends, and well-wishers for their support, promising not to take their encouragement for granted.
