The Ondo State Police Command on Friday confirmed the arrest of 11 persons in connection with the abduction of worshippers at a Celestial Church in Uso, even as security operatives step up efforts to free those still in captivity.

The incident occurred at a church located along the Uso/Owo Expressway in Uso community.

Addressing journalists, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, said the suspects were apprehended following intelligence-driven operations launched in the aftermath of the attack.

He disclosed that the operation involved a coordinated effort by the police, the Nigerian Army, and local vigilante groups.

According to the police, the abduction took place at about 12:50 a.m. on February 25, 2026, when gunmen reportedly invaded the church premises and whisked away six worshippers to an undisclosed location.

The command stated that upon receiving distress information, tactical and intelligence teams were promptly mobilised, leading to the rescue of one of the victims and the initial arrest of a suspect.

Further operations, the police said, resulted in the arrest of additional suspects, bringing the total number in custody to 11.

The Commissioner noted that those arrested were being interrogated and had volunteered information considered vital to ongoing efforts aimed at dismantling the criminal network and tracking down the remaining abductees.

While assuring residents of intensified security measures, the command advised religious leaders to scale down late-night worship activities for now and strengthen internal security arrangements.

Residents were equally urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police formation.
