A 300-level medical student of the University of Ibadan (UI) reportedly lost his life on Sunday night after consuming an insecticide, according to officials at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
It was gathered that the student was discovered on the ground floor of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall by a fellow resident, who found him foaming at the mouth and disoriented.
He allegedly admitted to taking the insecticide, identified as Sniper, before collapsing.
Sources said his roommates quickly informed hall authorities, who contacted the Students’ Union bus service to rush him to Jaja Clinic.
He was initially stabilised with oxygen therapy and intravenous fluids before being transferred to UCH’s emergency unit, where he was placed on life support.
Confirming the incident, UCH Public Relations Officer, Funmi Adetuyibi, stated, “The student was brought in after reports that he consumed Sniper.
“The hospital responded immediately, but unfortunately, he did not survive.”
The deceased’s parents, residents of Akure, Ondo State, were reportedly summoned to the hospital prior to his death.
While they suggested the possibility of poisoning during preliminary inquiries, his roommates maintained that he had admitted taking the insecticide and noted behavioural changes in recent weeks, including withdrawing from classes and avoiding contact with family.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about the depiction of suicide in online content.
A advocacy group, Suicide Is No Solution Initiative, condemned the recent rise of social media skits featuring suicide-related acts, warning that such content could harm vulnerable individuals.
