The Cross River State House of Assembly has placed Mr Ovat Agbor, representative of Obubra I State Constituency, on indefinite suspension following allegations of violent conduct.

Although the Assembly did not provide full details, reports suggest that Agbor allegedly manhandled his wife on multiple occasions, reportedly linked to excessive drinking and late-night habits.

The House condemned the behaviour as unbecoming of a legislator.

The decision was reached during plenary on Thursday after a motion moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo.

Members described the actions as contrary to the ethical standards expected of lawmakers.

Following deliberations, Agbor was suspended from all legislative duties pending the outcome of an investigation. A committee has been set up to probe the matter and report back to the House for further action.

He was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms in line with the resolution.

Speaker Elvert Ayambem reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to discipline, integrity, and the dignity of the legislature, emphasizing that members must reflect the trust placed in them by their constituents.

Prior to the suspension, Governor Bassey Otu and his wife, Eyoanwan, had publicly rebuked Agbor over his alleged actions.

It was reported that the Speaker personally intervened weeks ago to take Agbor’s wife to a hospital for her safety.

In a public statement, the lawmaker’s wife, Glory Agbor, appealed for privacy, noting that she and her husband have resolved their differences amicably.

She announced her withdrawal from the Legislators’ Wives Association and asked the public to refrain from misrepresenting her family.
