The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 15-year-old boy, Gobri Yusuf, for allegedly killing his guardian, identified simply as Akanbi, who reportedly adopted and raised him in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.
The teenager was accused of attacking the woman with household items after an earlier attempt to poison her reportedly failed.
The state Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, disclosed this during a press briefing on Friday at the police command headquarters in Ilorin.
According to the police chief, the suspect was apprehended following a distress call received by the command reporting that the woman was found lying in a pool of blood inside her residence.
Ojo said preliminary investigations showed that the suspect, who lived with the deceased, allegedly carried out the attack while the woman was in the bathroom.
He explained that the teenager was said to have hidden behind a door before launching the assault using several household objects.
The commissioner noted that officers recovered some items believed to have been used during the attack, including a frying pan, a weighing scale, a kitchen spatula and knives.
He added that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to committing the act, claiming he harboured resentment towards the deceased.
Ojo further stated that after the incident, the teenager reportedly changed his clothes and left the residence under the pretext of running an errand.
He was said to have later contacted the deceased’s husband, who returned home and discovered his wife’s lifeless body.
The police commissioner confirmed that the suspect remains in custody as investigations into the incident continue.
