The University of Jos community in Plateau State was gripped by shock on Friday after the remains of a baby were discovered inside a clogged drainage pipe linked to a female hostel in the Naraguta area of the campus.
The disturbing discovery reportedly followed complaints by students about a persistent foul odour and a blocked sewage system, which prompted authorities to engage maintenance workers to trace the source of the problem.
Eyewitnesses said plumbers invited to fix the faulty facility stumbled on the remains while attempting to clear the obstruction in the pipe.
A hostel porter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the baby might have been disposed of through a toilet, possibly after an abortion by an unidentified student.
She explained that the incident came to light when the workers broke parts of the pipe during the repair process and found the remains lodged within the drainage system.
The development sparked outrage and disbelief among students, many of whom expressed shock that such an incident could occur within the hostel premises.
Some residents of the hostel called on the university management and relevant authorities to launch a full-scale investigation to uncover those responsible and ensure justice is served.
As of the time of filing this report, the institution had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
Efforts to reach the university’s Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful, as calls and messages were not responded to.
