Joint security operatives on Sunday thwarted a suspected bandits’ attack on an ECWA Church in Omugo community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, rescuing three abducted victims.

The assailants were said to have invaded the church during a service, causing panic among worshippers and residents.

A community source disclosed that the gunmen stormed the premises and abducted several congregants before security personnel responded swiftly to repel the attack.

An anonymous member of the Kwara South Joint Security Watch told The PUNCH that at least seven persons were taken during the incident.

Confirming the development, the State Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, said three of the victims had been rescued, while efforts were ongoing to secure the release of others.

She commended the prompt response of security agencies, forest guards and local vigilantes, noting that their coordinated action helped to repel the attackers and prevent further casualties.

Olukoju added that the state government had directed security operatives to intensify efforts to track down those responsible and ensure the safe return of the remaining victims.

She condemned the attack on a place of worship, describing it as unacceptable and a threat to public safety.

The commissioner also called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to curb criminal activities in the area.

According to her, ongoing forest combing operations have yielded positive results in reducing the activities of criminal elements across affected communities.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents of continued collaboration with relevant security stakeholders.

Security concerns have heightened in recent days following intelligence reports of planned attacks in parts of Kwara South.

The Kwara South Joint Security Watch had earlier warned of possible assaults targeting Ifelodun, Irepodun and Isin local government areas.

Its coordinator, Olaitan Oyin-Zubair, said intelligence indicated that the attacks were being planned for March 23 and March 28, 2026.

He noted that security agencies had begun deploying military and paramilitary personnel, alongside aerial surveillance, to prevent the anticipated attacks.
