A Jos magistrate  court on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old unemployed man, John Bawa, to two years in prison for stealing from and insulting his mother.

The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Irene Pati following Bawa’s guilty plea.

The court also gave him the option of paying fines of N30,000 for theft and N50,000 for insulting his mother.

According to the prosecutor, Daniel Lengman, the case was reported to the Police Monitoring Unit on February 12 by the complainant, Mr Lami. Bawa was accused of stealing N100,000 and several cooking pots, which he reportedly sold as scrap.

The prosecutor added that when his mother confronted him over the theft, Bawa insulted her.

The offence was said to contravene the Plateau Penal Code Law.
