An 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, has been convicted and sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment by a High Court sitting in the Gwarzo Division of Kano State over a rape offence.

The conviction was secured at High Court No. 24 following prosecution by the Kano State Ministry of Justice.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Najib Lawan Dambazau, it was disclosed that the offence occurred on November 30, 2024, in Sauna, Gabasawa Local Government Area.

The statement noted that the prosecution presented compelling evidence which proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Delivering judgment, Justice Aisha Mahmud found the defendant guilty and handed down a 14-year jail term. The court, however, noted that it considered the plea for leniency made by the defence before arriving at its decision.

The case was prosecuted by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, alongside other members of the legal team.

Reacting to the judgment, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, commended the prosecution team for what he described as a diligent effort in securing justice.

He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of victims, while ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
