The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has rejected criticisms over its directive requiring support groups to register with the party, describing the reactions as misleading and capable of causing disunity.
The party said the measure was introduced to improve coordination among groups working towards the re-election of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Monday by the State Publicity Secretary, Otunba Kayode Muyide, the APC accused a group claiming loyalty to the President of misrepresenting the purpose of the directive.
It explained that the registration process was a routine administrative step aimed at organising activities and ensuring alignment with the party’s structure in the state.
The APC cautioned that attempts to politicise the issue and discredit the leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the party could undermine unity within its ranks.
It further stated that registering support groups is a common practice in political parties, particularly during election periods, as it helps to prevent overlap, enforce discipline, and boost mobilisation.
The party maintained that the directive was designed to consolidate and coordinate the efforts of support groups, not to restrict or sideline them.
It also noted that the current leadership under the State Chairman, Kolawole Babatunde, has prioritised inclusiveness and reconciliation among members.
The APC called on stakeholders and party loyalists to support the initiative, stressing the need for cohesion as preparations intensify for future elections.
