The Federal Road Safety Corps has handed over N101,170 and a motorcycle recovered from the scene of a fatal hit-and-run accident to the families of the victims in Ondo State.

The State Sector Commander, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, presented the items to the bereaved families on Friday in Akure, describing the move as a demonstration of the agency’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Ibitoye explained that the crash, which occurred on January 5 at about 5:40 a.m. along Ijoka Road, involved a tipper truck and a motorcycle, leading to the death of the rider and his passenger.

He said FRSC rescue officials responded promptly to the incident, evacuating the victims to the morgue at the state hospital, while also recovering the motorcycle and the sum of N101,170 found on the deceased passenger.

According to him, the motorcycle was handed over to the rider’s immediate family, while the cash was returned to the children of the deceased passenger.

He noted that the gesture underscored the corps’ dedication to safeguarding not only lives but also property, stressing that items recovered at crash scenes are always preserved and returned to rightful owners.

The sector commander urged motorists, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise patience and show consideration for other road users to prevent avoidable tragedies.

He also advised operators of motorcycles and tricycles to refrain from travelling at night, urging them to wait until daylight for better visibility and safety.

Responding on behalf of the family, Aderonke Akinyike, daughter of the deceased passenger, commended the FRSC for its integrity in handling and returning the money intact.

She disclosed that her late mother was on her way to the market when the accident occurred, adding that the exact amount recovered had been duly handed over to the family.

Similarly, the elder brother and wife of the deceased rider expressed appreciation to the corps, noting that the motorcycle was returned without any financial demand.

They praised the FRSC for its professionalism and urged the agency to sustain its commitment to public trust and service.
