A 41-year-old man, Uchenna Aghoha, has been arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly killing his wife, Esther, during a domestic dispute in the Satellite Town area of the state.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, has sparked fresh concerns over rising cases of domestic violence.

Sources told PUNCH Metro that the deceased had reportedly endured repeated abuse in the marriage prior to the fatal altercation.

It was gathered that an argument between the couple escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the suspect allegedly punched his wife, leading to her collapse.

A resident familiar with the incident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the couple’s daughter raised the alarm after witnessing the development.

“Their fights were not unusual, but this one turned tragic. The daughter ran out to call for help, saying her mother had collapsed after being struck. When neighbours got there, she was unresponsive,” the source said.

Another police source disclosed that the couple’s 14-year-old daughter later reported the incident at a nearby police station.

According to the source, officers who responded to the report found that the victim had been taken to the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Ojo, where she was confirmed dead by a doctor on duty.

“The girl narrated the incident to the police, and our operatives moved to the scene.

The victim had already been rushed to the hospital, where she was certified brought in dead,” the source added.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the suspect is currently in custody, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital, Yaba, for autopsy.

She added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigation.

The incident adds to growing concerns over domestic violence in Nigeria, with stakeholders calling for stricter enforcement of laws and increased public awareness to address the menace.
