Public outrage has trailed a viral video showing some policemen allegedly attached to the Edo State Police Command assaulting an individual.
The footage, which surfaced on X on Thursday, captured at least five uniformed officers surrounding a man lying on the ground near a white bus.
In the clip, one of the officers was seen dragging the victim by the legs while another struck him with what appeared to be a plastic pipe.
Despite attempts by the victim to resist, he was overpowered by the officers.
Reacting to the development, the Edo State Police Command confirmed that it had commenced an investigation into the incident.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed via X that the video had been forwarded to the Complaint Response Unit in Benin for immediate action.
“We are already on it. The video has been shared with the CRU Benin, and efforts are ongoing to identify the officers involved.
Anyone with clearer footage should forward it as evidence via direct message or WhatsApp,” she stated.
The incident comes amid growing public concern over police conduct across the country.
In a related development, a recent incident in Delta State drew widespread condemnation after a suspect, identified as Mene Ogidi, was shot dead in broad daylight in Effurun.
Authorities confirmed that the officer involved has since been arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters for disciplinary measures.
The Inspector-General of Police has also ordered firm action in the case, approving the dismissal and prosecution of officers linked to the killing.
The latest video has further intensified calls for accountability and reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
