A contractor has died in an industrial accident during underwater maintenance at the Egbin Power Plc facility in Lagos State, prompting an investigation and disruption to electricity generation.
As reported by Daily Post, the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, reportedly led to a partial shutdown of operations at the plant and its temporary disconnection from the national grid.
Sources familiar with the development said the deceased, engaged as a diver, was carrying out maintenance work at the plant’s lagoon-based pump house when a pump allegedly activated unexpectedly.
He was said to have been trapped in the impeller, resulting in fatal injuries.
Following the incident, operations in the affected section were immediately suspended as safety protocols were activated, a move that later contributed to a broader shutdown of the facility.
Checks indicated that the power station recorded zero megawatt generation on Wednesday and Thursday.
Confirming the development in a statement, the management of Egbin Power Plc expressed grief over the loss, describing the incident as tragic.
The company extended condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased, stating that emergency response measures were promptly initiated after the occurrence.
It added that relevant authorities had been notified and that it was cooperating with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The firm further assured that a comprehensive review was underway, reiterating its commitment to maintaining high safety standards and safeguarding the welfare of its personnel and contractors.
The development has reportedly impacted power supply in parts of the electricity network, with outages recorded in areas connected to the plant, which has an installed capacity of 1,320 megawatts.
