Gunmen on Friday night launched a deadly attack on a mining site in Mazat community, Ropp District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing four persons, including a pregnant woman, and leaving four others injured.

Residents said the assailants struck at about 7 p.m., opening fire on miners who were at work, causing panic and multiple casualties before fleeing the scene unchallenged.

A community member, Amos Davou, who confirmed the incident, said the attackers operated without resistance, leaving behind a trail of grief and destruction.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association condemned the attack, describing it as senseless and inhumane.

In a statement, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, said the news was received with deep sorrow and outrage.

The association lamented the recurring violence in parts of Plateau State, noting that innocent residents continue to bear the brunt of insecurity despite repeated outcries.

It also raised concern over the destruction of farmlands in Jol village, Riyom Local Government Area, warning that such incidents threaten food production and the livelihoods of rural communities.

According to the group, the devastation of crops at the start of the farming season could worsen economic hardship in the affected areas.

The association expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

It called on security agencies to swiftly investigate the attack, arrest those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted.

The group further urged government at all levels to strengthen security around vulnerable communities, mining locations, and farmlands in Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and other parts of the state.

Residents, particularly youths, were advised to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while supporting security agencies with credible intelligence to prevent further attacks.

The association stressed that the continued loss of lives and destruction of livelihoods must be halted, insisting on the need to uphold the sanctity of human life.
