The Nigerian police have arrested an Enugu-based nurse, Joy Ezeugwu, following the circulation of a viral video that exposed alleged poor conditions at Uwani General Hospital.
Ezeugwu was reportedly picked up on Monday by operatives from the Police Force Headquarters Annex in Enugu, according to an education technologist, Alex Onyia, who disclosed the development via his X handle.
Onyia alleged that the arrest was instigated by the administrator of the nurse’s former school, Ezzy College of Nursing, Ifeyinwa Peace Okwudu.
“Joy Ezeugwu was arrested this morning by a team from the Police Force Headquarters Annex, Enugu.
The officers were reportedly acting on the directive of her former school administrator,” Onyia wrote, decrying what he described as growing oppression of students and workers.
The arrest comes weeks after the nurse was suspended in April over a video she shared online, which highlighted deteriorating conditions at Uwani General Hospital.
The footage, which gained traction on social media, showed health workers lamenting the lack of basic amenities such as electricity and running water, warning that the situation was hampering effective healthcare delivery, especially during emergencies.
Following the video’s release, Okwudu, through her legal counsel, demanded N10 million in damages from Ezeugwu, accusing her of breaching privacy.
In a letter sighted by our correspondent, the administrator claimed the recording was made during a closed-door staff meeting held in her office, where participants were instructed not to bring mobile phones or recording devices.
She alleged that Ezeugwu denied having a phone at the meeting but secretly concealed one in her bag and recorded proceedings without consent.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
