No fewer than five persons have been confirmed dead following a late-night attack by gunmen in Fan District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The assailants were said to have ambushed residents at about 9pm on Sunday, opening fire on them without warning as they made their way home, thereby reigniting tension in the troubled community.
A resident, Pam Saidu, who confirmed the incident on Monday, disclosed that four victims died instantly, while another succumbed to injuries at a hospital.
“Four persons were killed on the spot, and one later died in the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds,” he said.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association also corroborated the attack, condemning the killings and calling for urgent intervention.
Its Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, described the incident as “unfortunate and condemnable,” urging security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property in the area.
He stressed the need for proactive measures to forestall further bloodshed, noting that the district had experienced repeated episodes of violence in recent times.
Residents said the latest attack had heightened fear across the community, with many calling for increased security patrols and a more robust response from law enforcement authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, proved abortive, as calls to his line were not answered.
