Prominent rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has resigned her membership of the African Democratic Congress and defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where she has declared her ambition to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu made this known in a statement shared on her X handle on Wednesday, attributing her decision to what she described as a clearer vision of Nigeria’s future and her continued alignment with the political direction of Peter Obi.
She stated that her move was driven by a commitment to remain consistent with her earlier support for Obi, whom she described as representing the aspirations of Nigerians seeking effective governance.
According to her, “The next few days will shape the future of this country.
This realisation informed my decision to resign from the African Democratic Congress and join the Nigeria Democratic Congress as I continue to align with the leadership of Peter Obi, who represents the hope of a functional Nigeria.”
The activist explained that her initial backing of Obi influenced her earlier decision to join the ADC, noting that her defection to the NDC was a continuation of that political stance.
She further revealed that beyond joining the party, she would be contesting for the FCT senatorial seat under the NDC platform in the next general elections.
“Yes, I am joining the NDC not just as a member, but as a candidate for the FCT Senate seat,” she added.
Yesufu also said she had formally concluded her engagements with the ADC, describing her exit as orderly and expressing appreciation to members of the party for their support during her time there.
She noted that her experience within the party, where she served in various capacities including sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair and secretary, was rewarding and impactful.
Her defection comes amid ongoing political realignments within the opposition, following the recent move by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Obi to the NDC, a development that has sparked a wave of defections from the ADC.
