Fear gripped residents of Furyam Takzul community in Kantana Ward of Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State after suspected gunmen attacked the area in the early hours of Sunday, killing two persons and abducting five others, including women and children.
Residents said the assailants stormed the community around 12:05am, firing sporadically and forcing villagers to flee their homes for safety.
Sources within the community disclosed that the attackers arrived in large numbers and operated for several minutes before abducting five residents to an undisclosed location.
The latest assault has heightened tension in the area, with many locals expressing fears over possible renewed attacks.
Confirming the incident, the Youth Leader of Furyam Takzul, Haruna Khalid, described the attack as devastating and traumatic for residents.
According to him, two people lost their lives during the invasion, while five others were taken away by the gunmen.
Khalid said the attackers invaded the community without warning and shot indiscriminately, causing panic and confusion among residents.
He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted victims and strengthen security surveillance across vulnerable communities in Kanam Local Government Area.
The youth leader also appealed to the government and security operatives to take urgent steps to prevent further attacks in the area.
As of the time of filing this report, the police and military authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
