The Kebbi State Hisbah Board has freed two women arrested over alleged indecent dressing in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi after subjecting them to counselling on modesty and moral conduct.
The Director of the Board, Surajo Usman, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi.
Usman explained that the Board acted following complaints lodged by residents of the community on Friday, May 8, alleging that some women residing in a house within the area often appeared outside in revealing outfits considered inappropriate by members of the neighbourhood.
According to him, officials of the Hisbah Board were deployed to investigate the allegations and verify the complaints raised by residents.
He said the operation led to the arrest of two women suspected to be involved in the act.
Usman noted that during interrogation, the women admitted dressing in the manner complained about but insisted there was no intention to violate community values.
He stated that the suspects explained that the intense heat being experienced in the area influenced their choice of clothing, which they said was intended to provide comfort and ventilation.
The Hisbah director added that the women later expressed regret over the incident and assured the authorities that such behaviour would not be repeated.
He said the Board counselled them on the need to uphold modesty, morality, and respect for religious and societal values, stressing the importance of decent dressing even within residential environments.
Following the counselling session, the women were released and warned to conduct themselves in a manner acceptable to the community.
Usman also appealed to residents to support efforts aimed at promoting moral discipline and peaceful coexistence across the state.
