The Anambra State Police Command has arrested one of its officers over the alleged killing of a three-month-old baby in Okija, located in the Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
The command disclosed on Friday that the officer, whose name was not revealed, had been identified and taken into custody as investigations into the incident commenced.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command had launched a comprehensive probe to unravel the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death and ensure justice is served.
Ikenga explained that the officer was currently undergoing interrogation alongside other internal disciplinary procedures in line with regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Anambra State Police Command confirms that the police officer allegedly connected with the unfortunate incident that resulted in the death of a three-month-old baby in Okija has been identified and taken into custody,” the statement read.
It added, “The command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain the facts and ensure that justice is served.”
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, was said to have expressed sadness over the development and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
The command also assured residents that the investigation would be handled with transparency and professionalism, stressing that any individual found culpable would face the law.
While appealing for calm, the police warned members of the public against actions capable of escalating tension in the area.
The statement further noted that updates on the outcome of the investigation would be made public as proceedings continue.
