A young politician and community mobiliser in Ebubu community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Samuel Obe Ngobe, has been shot dead by suspected assassins.
The deceased was reportedly killed on May 22 after two masked gunmen stormed a hotel he owned in the community and opened fire on him at close range.
Sources in the area said the attackers arrived on a motorcycle before heading directly to where Ngobe was seated and shooting him repeatedly.
Residents disclosed that the assailants also seized mobile phones belonging to hotel workers and other persons at the scene to stop them from alerting security operatives during the attack.
The killing has heightened tension in the community, with residents expressing concern over the growing wave of violent crimes in the area.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the command was aware of the development.
The police spokesperson, however, did not immediately provide details on arrests or ongoing investigations into the killing.
