BREAKING: Court dismisses suit seeking to bar Jonathan from 2027 presidential race

A Federal High Court in Abuja has reportedly cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election following the dismissal of a suit challenging his eligibility.

The suit, filed by Johnmary Jideobi, sought an order restraining Jonathan from presenting himself as a candidate for the presidency under any political party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The plaintiff also prayed the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting, processing, or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.

Jideobi had asked the court to determine whether the former president remained qualified to seek another term in office, citing provisions of Sections 1(1), 1(2), 1(3), and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution.

The development comes days after a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki reportedly granted Jonathan a waiver and endorsed him as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 after completing the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before winning the 2011 presidential election.
