A student of Lagos State University has died after succumbing to injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.
The deceased, identified as Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, was a student in the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts.
The university disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday by its Acting Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr Olaniyi Jeariogbe.
According to the statement, Otabor was attacked alongside some of his friends by suspected armed robbers on the night of May 29, 2026, in an off-campus incident within the Iba community.
The institution said it received the news of the student’s death with deep sorrow, noting that he battled injuries sustained during the attack before eventually passing away on Tuesday, June 2.
The university explained that upon receiving reports of the incident, the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, immediately intervened by providing support to the victim, briefing the Vice-Chancellor and maintaining communication with medical personnel overseeing his treatment.
It added that the university closely monitored developments throughout the student’s hospitalisation in a bid to ensure he received the necessary care.
Following his death, officials of the institution reportedly engaged with members of the deceased’s family, representatives of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and law enforcement authorities.
LASU said it was working closely with security agencies to facilitate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted.
“The University is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the attack are thoroughly investigated and those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement said.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased on behalf of the institution.
The university also prayed for the peaceful repose of Otabor’s soul and called for justice to be served in the case.
