Eight Pastors arraigned over alleged violation of security law

The Anambra State Government has arraigned eight clerics before a court in Awka over alleged violations of the state’s Homeland Security Law.

The pastors, who were arrested in Onitsha, Awka and other parts of the state, were brought before the court on Friday at the Anambra State Judiciary Complex in Awka.

The state government accused the clerics of engaging in activities that contravene provisions of the Homeland Security Law enacted in 2025.

The accused persons were identified as Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.

Speaking on the development, the media aide to the state governor, Ejimofor Opara, described the defendants as “fake pastors” and alleged that their activities violated the provisions of the security law.

The legislation, which came into force in February 2025, prohibits certain practices considered harmful to public order and targets activities linked to fraudulent wealth-acquisition schemes.

The crackdown follows earlier actions by the state government against some native doctors accused of promoting illicit get-rich-quick practices. While some of the suspects were convicted and jailed, others are still facing trial.

The prosecution is being led by the Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, , who is representing the state in the case.

The matter was adjourned for further proceedings.
