The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media activist, Akaninyene Udo, over allegations of disseminating false security information capable of causing panic among residents.
The suspect was reportedly taken into custody after allegedly publishing misleading content on social media suggesting the existence of an imminent security threat in parts of the state.
According to the police, the posts generated widespread anxiety among residents and triggered responses from security agencies.
Confirming the arrest in a statement issued on Monday in Uyo, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the suspect was apprehended following investigations into a viral social media publication.
The police spokesperson identified the suspect as a resident of Akpautong in Esit Eket Local Government Area, noting that he operates a social media platform under the name “AK Philo.”
She said preliminary investigations linked him to the circulation of information considered capable of undermining public peace and creating unnecessary fear among members of the public.
“The individual was arrested for circulating false information capable of breaching public peace and causing panic among residents,” the statement read.
The command maintained that the arrest was part of efforts to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent situations that could threaten public order.
Police authorities disclosed that investigations were ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the publication and whether other persons were involved in originating or amplifying the alleged false alert.
The command also urged residents to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing it on social media platforms.
It warned that individuals found culpable of spreading unverified reports capable of causing public panic would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state while encouraging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information through established communication channels.
