An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday sentenced a 20-year-old carpenter, Boluwatife Adewumi, to eight months imprisonment for stealing an air conditioner valued at N350,000.
Adewumi was convicted on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, theft, unlawful entry, and malicious damage.
The defendant, who was arraigned on September 9, 2025, initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Although granted bail, he was unable to meet the conditions attached to it and remained in custody throughout the trial.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Kausarat Ayofe found the carpenter guilty on all counts and sentenced him to eight months imprisonment without the option of a fine.
The magistrate ordered that the sentence should take effect from September 9, 2025, the date of his arraignment and remand in custody.
She further ruled that the eight-month jail terms imposed on each of the four counts would run concurrently.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Olalekan Adegbite, told the court that the offences were committed on September 5, 2025, at about 3:25 a.m. at the premises of Mutual Benefit Insurance Company in the Onireke area of Ibadan.
According to the prosecution, Adewumi, in collaboration with accomplices who are still at large, unlawfully entered the company’s premises and stole an air conditioner belonging to the organisation.
Adegbite stated that the convict damaged the appliance in the process of removing it, with the intention of carting it away.
He added that the offences contravened Sections 516, 390(9), 412, and 451 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
