The Kogi State Police Command has launched a manhunt for three suspects over the death of a primary school teacher who allegedly died after being assaulted for disciplining a pupil.
The deceased, Maryam Usman, 30, was said to have sustained serious injuries during the attack, which reportedly occurred on June 18 at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that the case of alleged culpable homicide was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly stormed the school and attacked the teacher over disciplinary action she had taken against a pupil.
The statement said the victim was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before she was referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo for further medical care.
She, however, died on June 25 from injuries allegedly sustained during the assault.
Afusat said detectives visited both the scene of the incident and the deceased’s residence after the case was reported, while necessary documentation had been completed.
She added that arrangements were being made to move the body to the General Hospital in Ankpa for an autopsy.
The police spokesperson said the suspects fled before officers arrived, adding that efforts were underway to track them down.
She noted that once arrested, the suspects would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution.
The command assured residents that it remained committed to ensuring that everyone connected with the incident is brought to justice.
