The Ondo State Police Command has warned cult groups and other criminal elements against organising or participating in any unlawful gathering, procession, initiation or celebration linked to the annual “July 7” cult activities across the state.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, it said intelligence reports indicated that some cult groups were planning activities to mark the occasion, raising concerns over possible threats to public safety and disruption of lawful activities.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to identified flashpoints and other strategic locations across the state.
According to the command, the operation involves officers from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit, State Intelligence Department, Mobile Police Force, as well as personnel from various Area Commands and Divisions.
The operatives have been directed to intensify visibility policing, conduct confidence-building patrols, surveillance and intelligence-led raids to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
The police stressed that they would not tolerate unlawful gatherings, public display of cult insignia, brandishing of weapons, violent processions or any activity capable of creating fear among residents.
It warned that anyone found violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with existing legal provisions.
The command also urged parents and guardians to discourage their children and wards from associating with cult groups or taking part in any activity connected with the proposed celebration.
Owners of hotels, lounges, event centres, bars and recreational facilities were equally advised not to allow their premises to be used for cult-related meetings or activities, warning that anyone found aiding or harbouring criminal elements would face prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police further appealed to community leaders, youth organisations, transport unions, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or gatherings to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
While assuring residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to safeguard lives and property, the command urged the public to continue their lawful activities without fear, stating that security personnel were fully prepared to respond swiftly to any attempt to disrupt the peace in the state.
