Sharia court frees Jigawa commissioner accused of adultery
A Kano State Upper Sharia Court has acquitted and discharged the suspended Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwalu Sankara, over charges of illicit affair with a married woman.
Sankara was brought before the Sharia court in October, following his arrest by the Kano State Hisbah at his residence in Kano, based on a complaint by Nasiru Buba Jalam, who accused him of having an illicit affair with his wife.
Anwalu was arrested alongside the woman at his uncompleted house in Kano when the commissioner visited.
The PUNCH reported that Jalam filed a case against his wife, Taslim and Sankara, over alleged illicit affairs.
Following the arrest of Sankara by the Hisbah board, the Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, suspended the commissioner and set up a committee to probe the allegation.
The suspended commissioner also pleaded not guilty, saying the development was to tarnish his image.
At the hearing of the suit instituted by the husband of the estranged woman in October, the presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola, directed the Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 1 in Kano to investigate the case and submit the report to the court.
Delivering his judgement on Monday, Justice Yola said based on the police report, the complainant failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove the allegation.
“This case filed against Taslim Baba Nabegu and Auwalu Dalladi Sankara lacks merits and reliable evidence for the court to proceed with it.
“Therefore, the case is hereby struck out. The first and second defendants are discharged,” the court ruled.
Speaking after the ruling, counsel for the first defendant, Rabiu Shuaibu Abdullahi, expressed satisfaction.
Also, the counsel for the suspended commissioner, Saddam Suleiman Shehu, said the ruling had confirmed Sankara’s innocence.
“We are studying the outcome of the judgment and the suspected political witch-hunt for further action,” the counsel stated.
