FCT Minister orders crackdown as suspected manhole vandals arrested

Security operatives in Abuja have arrested several suspects linked to the theft of sewage manhole covers from highways, a criminal act that endangers road users and undermines public safety.

Efforts are also underway to apprehend other accomplices, including buyers of the stolen items.

The arrests come on the heels of a directive from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who has tasked relevant agencies with addressing the disturbing trend. The Minister expressed deep concern over the vandalism, condemning those who prioritize personal gain over public welfare.

“It is shocking and disheartening that some Nigerians would go to such devilish lengths, removing manhole covers that ensure the safety of road users, just to sell them for profit,” Wike said. “This government will not tolerate such acts of sabotage, and we will ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.”

The Minister also criticized those who purchase the stolen covers, noting that their complicity exacerbates the problem. He reassured residents of the FCT that his administration is determined to protect public infrastructure from further vandalism.

Wike commended a vigilant citizen whose viral video exposed the theft, calling it a patriotic act that exemplifies the role of citizens in holding society accountable. “This is the kind of commitment we need from Nigerians to tackle these challenges,” he stated.

The FCT administration has promised to provide updates on the investigation as it continues its efforts to safeguard public assets and punish offenders.
