Body of labourer stuck inside well recovered

The body of a well-digger, Michael Eri, who was stuck inside a well he was working inside in the Seriki village in the Owode Egba area of Ogun State has been recovered.

PUNCH Metro learnt from a community source who pleaded anonymity because of the nature of the incident on Saturday, that Eri was stuck inside the well which collapsed on him for more than two days.

The source told our correspondent that the well-digger was contracted by someone to dig a well on his premises and in the course of carrying out the project, the ground collapsed and fell on Eri, who was inside the well.

The source added that rescuers came to the scene and after several hours recovered his dead body.

The source said, “Eri was contracted by someone in the area to dig a well on his land and the process had been going smoothly.

“But some days after, the ground collapsed and fell on him leaving him stuck for more than two days. After several efforts by rescuers, his dead body was recovered.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident to our correspondent in a telephone conversation on Sunday.

Odutola noted that the person who contracted Eri reported the matter to the police division in the area.

She said, “On January 9, 2025, at about 1500hrs, one Jimoh Ogundipe “M” of Seriki Village via Owode Egba came to the station and reported that he contracted one Eri Michael “M” OF Obafe Quarters, Owode Egba, to dig a well in his residence at the above-mentioned address.

“He further stated that while the digging was ongoing, the ground collapsed and trapped the said Michael “M” inside the uncompleted well for two days.

“Police visited the scene. Efforts are in progress to rescue the victim inside the ground.”

Meanwhile, a senior police officer in the area who was privy to the incident but not authorised to speak with the media confirmed to our correspondent in a telephone conversation on Sunday that Eri was recovered dead after frantic efforts by rescuers.

“The man was later recovered dead after efforts by rescuers,” the senior police officer said.
