The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta ruled on Tuesday that the installation of Alexander Macgregor as the Olu of Ilawo was illegal.
Justice Olatokunbo Majekodunmi delivered the verdict, ordering Macgregor to cease acting as the monarch. The court criticized the Ogun State Government for proceeding with Macgregor’s installation despite ongoing legal challenges.
The case was brought before the court by the Ogunsanya-Ariku Royal Family, which contested the nomination process.
The family alleged that traditional warrant chiefs were replaced with unfamiliar individuals to sway the selection outcome.
In the ruling, Justice Majekodunmi instructed that all official symbols of office, including the staff of office, be removed from Macgregor. The court also ordered the reinstatement of the Olu of Orile Ilawo’s traditional stool to its prior status until the matter is fully resolved.
Dr. David Ogunsanya, Secretary of the Ogunsanya-Ariku dynasty, welcomed the decision, calling it a victory for due process. He also warned that any defiance of the court’s order would be reported to the appropriate authorities.
The dispute arose following the death of the former Olu of Ilawo on December 24, 2021. The family claimed that the selection of his successor was manipulated, leading to the legal battle.
