The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested one Onu Simeon, following an altercation that led to the death of one Ifeanyi Chukwu at the Utako Market, Abuja.

According to a statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, around 9:30 a.m.

According to her, the command received a distress call about a fight at the market and immediately dispatched operatives to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found Chukwu lying unconscious and rushed him to the NNPC Hospital, Utako, where a doctor confirmed him dead.

The statement read, “On February 5, 2025, at about 09:30 AM, the Command received a distress call regarding a fight in Utako Market.

“Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, where Ifeanyi Chukwu was found lying unconscious on the ground. He was immediately rushed to NNPC Hospital, Utako, by police operatives, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead.”

Adeh added that preliminary investigations revealed that the conflict between Simeon, a resident of Anguwan Biggy, Jabi Daki Biyu, and Chukwu of Kuchigoro, Lugbe, started over a disputed space for displaying goods.

She further disclosed that the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Chukwu suddenly collapsed.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that Onu Simeon of Anguwan Biggy, Jabi Daki Biyu, and one Ifeanyi Chukwu of Kuchigoro, Lugbe, had earlier engaged in a dispute over a space to display their goods for sale.

“The disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Ifeanyi Chukwu suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. His remains have been deposited at a general hospital for further investigation, while the suspect, Onu Simeon, is currently in police custody as investigations continue. Further updates will be communicated in due course,” she added.

Adeh added that the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, while reacting to the incident, urged residents to embrace peaceful conflict resolution, warning that violence often leads to tragic consequences.
