The Federal University, Lokoja, has been shut down indefinitely following the deaths of five students in a tragic accident involving a trailer at Felele city center on Monday, February 17, 2025.
The university management reached this decision as tensions escalated, particularly after students staged a protest on Wednesday, barricading the institution’s entrance in response to the unfortunate incident.
In an official notice issued on Thursday, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Rebecca Okojie, stated that the shutdown was necessary to maintain peace and prevent further disturbances.
“Despite interventions by the state government and repeated calls for calm, the situation remains tense,” the statement emphasized.
Following recommendations from security agencies, the Vice-Chancellor, after consulting with the university’s management, directed the indefinite closure of both campuses as a precautionary measure.
Students were instructed to vacate the school premises no later than 12 noon on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
